Wireless Headset Buying Guide
Since its invention and development in 1994, Bluetooth and other wireless systems have exploded in popularity and today they pervade businesses, streets and homes. The convenience of not having to deal with the hassle of wires and the ease of use and comfort of having a wireless headset, has ensured the success of wireless technology.
Alongside these advantages are the health benefits for those who would be using their mobiles constantly, the freedom of hands-free and the ability to drive whilst talking. Given their popularity, it is no surprise that wireless headsets come in an extensive variety of different designs and specifications. Different headsets cater to different preferences, needs and uses for the technology and looking for the ideal headset can be a strenuous task. To make things more straightforward, below are a few of the most important considerations buyers ought to investigate before buying their headsets.
Compatibility
Although most Bluetooth headsets are now compatible with the majority of Bluetooth-enable mobiles, it is worth checking this before purchasing. There are a few different versions of Bluetooth so compatibility may not be guaranteed. Currently, Bluetooth version 2.0 is standard, but devices initially used versions 1.1 and 1.2.
Wearing the Headset
Wireless headsets are designed for a variety of uses and a diverse range of people. Some people will use their headsets all day long in an office whereas others may need headsets ideal for use whilst driving. People’s preferences, fashion senses and head shapes all vary and the selection of styles caters to all these particular factors. There are several main wearing styles of headset: over the head, over the ear, in the ear, behind the head and convertible. One factor that is definitely worth considering is when, how and for what the headset will be used.
The over the head standard design is the most popular. It is comfortable, easy to wear and can be used by people who wish to talk on their headsets for long sustained periods of time. The over the ear design is quickly becoming the preferred choice, however, and its innovative style can be comfortable as well as much less bulky that the over the head. The in the ear is even more lightweight and discreet that the over the ear and can be stored easily. On the other hand, the smaller these models get, the less comfort can be ensured.
Using the Headset
Another consideration that will influence the choice of headset will be its intended use. The choice between monaural and binaural – essentially, one ear or two – can depend on who the headset will be used by. Monaural, or single-earpiece sets, can be ideal for those who will be using their headsets while maintaining close proximity conversations. Binaural headsets may offer a better overall sound quality but the ability to continue other conversations may be difficult and inconvenient. The choice of microphone is also important as some headsets have boom microphones which extend towards the mouth for better audio clarity. These can, however, be bulky and limit other choices available in finding the right headset.
