What Are The Different Types of Headsets
There are several types of headsets available enabling you to be free and flexible at work or at play. Categories include wireless, corded, Bluetooth, office, mobile, gaming and computer headsets.
Recent wireless technology has resulted in the arrival of innovative products in the market place. Wireless headsets communicate with a base unit via radio signals, using Bluetooth, wi-fi, FM or infrared technology. With similar advantages of corded phones such as noise reduction and mute options, an additional feature in some products is an amplifier, enabling a roaming distance of up to 100 metres as well as signal enhancement.
Although corded headsets are not as flexible as wireless headsets, they are generally less expensive. There are models for use with PCs, with voice recognition and VoIP, which connect easily into a USB port or PC Soundcard socket. Single ear piece and double ear piece models are available with stereo sound and deep bass accentuation for listening to music or gaming. Using a corded headset with cordless phone provides the opportunity to be handsfree with the flexibility to walk around the office or home. Designs include over the head and over the ear options.
There are also corded headsets for corded phones which plug directly into the headset ready phone or into an amplifier when used with a non-compatible phone. They are useful in the office and around the home, and of particular use to people who are physically unable to hold a phone handset. These also come in a range of monoaural/biaural and over the head/over the ear options. Most corded headsets include a feature allowing the user to disconnect quickly and avoid removing the headset when moving a distance from the phone.
Bluetooth wireless headsets are most commonly used in conjunction with mobile phones whilst driving, although gamers are increasingly using them instead of corded headsets. They include noise reduction features and are available as a monaural one ear piece or binoaural two ear piece, either in an over the head or in the ear style. Wireless headsets are proving to be the most popular hands free system especially with the growth in popularity of Bluetooth enabled mobile phones. Bluetooth wireless headsets can be used with a PC to talk online or listen to stereo music via a wireless connection. Over the ear models feature volume control and call on/off buttons for simplicity and efficiency. Many include LED features to inform the user of low battery, missed calls and incoming calls and have an average roaming distance of approximately 10 metres.
For use in the home, headsets provide flexibility to multi-task whilst still able to deal with the job in hand and computer headsets allow the user to carry on typing while talking. Headsets are available in a choice of wireless, corded and Bluetooth, over the head, over the ear, behind the neck, or in the ear. They can be used with mobile phones, corded and cordless phones, PCs, laptops and gaming consoles, conference units and two-way radios, and their versatility results in increased productivity.
