Samsung
Samsung has had a long and industrious history dating back to the late 1930s when the son of a wealthy landowner set up his own trucking business. Since then the Samsung empire has grown and the aim of its chair people has always been to excel in as many different industries and marketplaces as possible.
As well as offering insurance and venturing into retail, Samsung has become best known in the west for its electronics and has recently become the world’s largest conglomerate, with a combined annual revenue reaching into the hundreds of billions of pounds.
Samsung Electronics Co Brand
In the 1980s the various electrical arms of Samsung were grouped under the Samsung Electronics Co brand and for consumers the first product on the market was a television set that displayed black and white images.
Throughout the 80s and 90s, Samsung became well known on the international market and today it is arguably the most popular brand in consumer electronics in the world. Although it lacks the prestige associated with its Japanese counterpart Sony, its products have become associated with value as well as quality. It is now the producer of innumerable different products, but there are several for which it is respected and from which it gains a large proportion of its income.
Samsung LCD TV, LED TV, 3D TV
Samsung produced its first LCD displays 15 years ago and has since become the world’s biggest producers of LCD screens for high definition televisions. It is now innovating in new areas of display technology. In 2009 it launched its first range of LED televisions, which use LED backlighting as opposed to traditional fluorescent alternatives.
LED televisions from Samsung consume up to 40% less power than their main rivals and can also be a fraction of the thickness, which makes them lighter and ideal for wall mounting.
Samsung is one of the first manufacturers to introduce 3D television sets to the consumer market. 3D TV is still in its infancy in the home cinema market, but as 3D broadcasts and 3D Blu-Ray players become more common, Samsung will be heading the pack with its own 3D-ready televisions.
The future of display technology is set to move beyond LCD screens and into the world of OLED. Samsung has already experimented with using the so-called Organic Light Emitting Diodes in its smartphones, which will be covered next. At the moment it is impractical to produce OLED screens for the mainstream market as the cost is just too high but when OLED arrives, Samsung will offer displays of this type which could potentially be rolled away for storage and will have vastly improved contrast ratios and colour pallets when compared to even the most advanced LCD displays of the modern world.
Samsung Mobile Phones
Samsung is the second largest manufacturer of mobile phone handsets in the world, with a market share of around 20%, which is increasing year on year and allowing it to draw much closer to current leader Nokia as time progresses.
It sells hundreds of millions of mobile phones each year and it has mobiles designed to suit people with different requirements and different budgets. At the high end it is always experimenting with new technologies and it is planning to launch mobile phones with integrated projection technology in the near future. These will allow users to project video onto any surface wherever they roam, essentially giving them a home cinema in their pockets.
Samsung Bada Mobile OS
Samsung has also recently introduced its own mobile operating system called Bada, which it hopes will rival the market leaders.
Samsung has made a name for itself in the home computing market, making particular impact with its memory and storage products as well as its laptops and netbooks. It is the world’s largest producer of DRAM technology and it is also responsible for a majority of the Flash memory technology, which is found in everything from USB thumb drives to mobile phones.
Samsung Digital Cameras
Samsung has a significant stake in the digital camera market and it has managed to encroach on established photography firms thanks to its strong brand identity and its excellent range of products. As with the mobile phone market, Samsung has attempted to create as diverse a range of digital photography products as possible, to attract the total amateur and the enthusiast.
Samsung has flourished on its ability to turn its hand to virtually anything and experience success. With plenty of backing and research behind its various products and with expertise gleaned through acquisitions and partnerships, it continues to expand its product range across the board. It has managed to create such a strong brand image because it has chosen to sponsor some of the world’s most popular sporting teams and events, which has not detracted from its stance as an electronics firm for the masses.
