Samsung S5230 Tocco Lite

The next generation of mobile phones has really hit the market hard, with most people snapping up touch screen phones with all sorts of internal wizardry making them do weird and wonderful things. As well as Apple’s iPhone one of the most popular phones has been the LG Cookie, a touchscreen phone with all sorts of options but at a budget price – and it is this model that the Samsung S5230 Tocco Lite is designed to take on in a head to head battle for the budget next generation mobile market.

The Samsung S5230 Tocco Lite has made an interesting choice with regards it’s touch screen. Where as most of the latest touch screen mobiles are capacitive styles, which means they are designed to be used with the fingers for touch, Samsung have opted for a resistive style. This means that the Samsung S5230 Tocco Lite is designed to be used with a stylus – some find this enjoyable to use, others find it a real pain, it really is a matter of taste.

This stylus means that you can now get hand writing recognition as a method of entering text. This is a very interesting option for those that like to send text messages as it means you can actually write out the text that you want to send as if you were writing a letter, rather than flicking around hitting keys (or more accurately, touching the screen where keys would be). Again a matter of taste but a very interesting option and, unlike some phones, it actually works very well.

But for those that don’t like it you can always use the traditional mobile 12 key keyboard, which can flash up on your screen at the touch of a button – or even a QWERTY keyboard if that is your preferred method of entering text.

This phone really does have a large number of really fantastic features built right in. Samsung have integrated the all important widgets, which can be integrated onto the front screen for ease of use (and there are 3 front screens which you can flit between with one sweep of the stylus). This is important as it is the widgets (or apps) that give this generation of mobile phones their popularity and the functionality. There are a wide selection of widgets available to download to do all manner of jobs, some are free and some are paid widgets.

There is an integrated, fully featured music player where you can list tracks by artist, by song or by album. The music player also creates automatic play-lists based on your most recently added songs and your most listened to tracks.

Other features include a 3.2mega pixel camera for both photos and video, and the ability to upgrade to a very impressive 16GB of internal memory – which is more than many MP3 players (and indeed some laptops), so should keep you going with songs and photos for a long time yet. It should certainly hold it’s own in the battle for the budget smart phone market.
