The mobile phone market is currently awash with great new handsets all jostling about for position in your pockets, and because there are so many options now is currently a great time to look for a new mobile phone on a great contract deal or the increasingly popular sim free option. And what better way to celebrate the new phones and technologies in the market today than by having a little bit of a Top 10 and talking about the future of mobile phones.

Top 10 Mobile Phones

Apple iPhone

The first generation of the iPhone – read our Apple iPhone review here – was considered by many to be a bit of an over-hyped piece of fashion nonsense, but the second generation iPhone is really the coming of age for the series with the essential introduction of 3G connectivity which really opens up the mobile internet capabilities of the iPhone.

Market leading touch screen technologies supporting multi-touch and superb user friendly interface means that the iPhone may be top of the heap for a while. The iPhone also packs a powerful gaming punch and with its accelerometer and processing abilities it’s more powerful and diverse than a PSP.

The main criticism would be the lack of a good quality camera, so snappers should perhaps look elsewhere.

Nokia N96

Some would argue that this is the phone that overwhelms the iPhone in nearly every area, and that is true in terms of the sheer feature packed functionality of the latest in the N range of smart phones from Nokia.

It has a 5 megapixel camera, 16GB of storage expandable through a micro SD card slot, a large screen with the best video playback available on any mobile today which makes it the ultimate media phone. It also features all of the things we’ve come to expect from smartphones like GPS and Wi-Fi connectivity. It’s major downsides are it’s size and weight.

Blackberry Storm

The first ever touch screen handset hot off the press and currently only available through Vodafone in the UK which makes the Blackberry Storm a pretty exclusive phone, instantly upping its credibility.

It features a unique Click Touch screen which may take a little getting used to but works really well, and a large and very crisp display that’s ideal for watching your movies and viewing photos. On top of this it offers all the functionality people have come to expect from a Blackberry such as great web, email and organiser capabilities. The major cons are the relatively disappointing 3.2 megapixel camera and the lack of Wi-Fi connectivity.

LG Renoir

If you can get past the really rather pretentious Renoir name of this latest touch screen phone from LG then you’ll have no problem finding a lot to like, especially if you’re a big photography fan and want to ditch your digital camera in favour of this all in one solution.

The Renoir has an 8 megapixel camera which can take great quality pictures, though the flash and low light performance leave something to be desired. It also has improved media capabilities and carries on the Viewty legacy of 120fps video recording capability, which some may like.

The interface isn’t as easy to use as some touch screen phones and it doesn’t have all the functionality of a smartphone, but then perhaps that’s not the point.

Samsung i8510

A smartphone that also boasts an 8 megapixel camera, this phone has been well received by critics and competes pretty well with the N96 in terms of functionality and features. Lack of a xenon flash makes the 8 megapixels a bit redundant in anything other than daylight shooting conditions.

HTC Touch HD

A relatively unknown manufacturer is the first to get the implementation of the Windows Mobile OS right, and is a touch screen handset to boot, keeping up with the competition. Comes with all the smartphone standards but lacks strong branding and sometimes the interface frustrates the fingers.

Tell me more..

Samsung Pixon

The latest in the current line of 8 megapixel camera phones with large touch screens, the Pixon is a worthy contender but again the lack of xenon flash and no 3.5mm headphone jack means that it isn’t quite the media powerhouse it should be.

Tell me more..

Nokia N85

The baby brother of the N96, the Nokia N85 tries to give you a good mid-range bang for your buck and performs admirably as a smartphone and is actually an upgraded, redesigned and lighter edition of the older N95, sharing the same dual sliding mechanism for media functionality.

Tell me more..

T-Mobile G1

The first smartphone offering from search engine success story Google, the G1 is a very well equipped phone that suffers massively from the fact that it’s really quite an ugly beast.

Tell me more..

Sony Ericsson W02

The latest in the walkman phones range from Sony Ericsson is an improvement thanks to great photo and video capabilities compared to equally priced handsets, along with easy to use music functionality.
