Mobile phones have come a long way in the last few years. While some of us remember using handsets with black and white screens, today it seems it’s all about smartphones, which provide much of the functionality of a PC, yet fit comfortably in your pocket.
But all that advanced technology comes at a price. Some of today’s mobile phones cost more than the average TV – and that means trying to replace a lost or broken phone could be costly.
That’s why it may be a good idea to make sure you’re insured. Today, there are various options for covering your costs in the event that your phone is broken or stolen.
Are you already covered?
Before you go ahead and buy gadget insurance for your mobile phone, make sure you’re not already covered. Some of the things you should check include:
Your mobile phone warranty
Most mobile phones come with a manufacturer’s warranty, meaning if your phone breaks (through no fault of your own) during that time, you should be eligible for a replacement.
Your home insurance
Some (but not all) home insurance policies include a certain level of cover for gadgets such as mobile phones. Sometimes it’s an added extra that you must pay for on top of your regular home insurance payments. Whether this cover is valid both inside and outside the home can vary between policies, so be sure to check with your policy if you’re unsure.
Finding the right mobile phone insurance
The right insurance for you depends on what you need.
Mobile phone insurance
If you’re only concerned about insuring your mobile phone, then you could buy insurance to cover you for just that (and only that). This may be ideal if you feel you’re covered for most other things you own, or if you don’t own many gadgets aside from your phone.
If you own a lot of gadgets – not just a mobile phone – it could be more cost-effective to buy a wider-ranging gadget insurance policy. It will probably cost a bit more than mobile phone insurance alone, but it will mean you’re also protected against theft and/or damage to other gadgets such as MP3 players, sat navs and laptops. Of course, every policy can differ, so check before you buy to make sure your policy covers you for everything you need.
