After months of anticipation by legions of die-hard Apple fans, the arrival of the new Apple iPhone 5 is here which means it is time to take a look at all the improvements over the iPhone 4S.
The iPhone 5 is now part of a lineup that also includes the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4 – we’ve moved on from the earlier versions!
The length of the iPhone 5 is now slightly longer at 4.87 inches versus 4.5 inches on the iPhone 4S. The width is the same on both versions at 2.31 inches; however, the iPhone 5 is thinner at 0.30 inches over the old model at 0.37.
The iPhone 5 is 28 grams lighter at 112 when compared to the iPhone 4S at 140 grams. A new feature to the iPhone 5 is LTE.
The screen of the iPhone 5 is now 4 inches, has a Retina display resolution of 1,136 x 640 pixels, 326ppi, a 16:9 aspect ratio, and even has improved Wi-Fi. The iPhone 4S has a 3.5 inch Retina display resolution of 960 x 640 pixels at 326ppi.
The iPhone 5 has a 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and 802.11n Wi-Fi on 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. The iPhone 4S has a 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi with 802.11n Wi-Fi on the 2.4GHz band.
The iPhone5 has DC-HSDPA and 4G LTE, but both versions have the same Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, GLONASS, and GSM Edge or CDMA.
The iPhone 5 contains a new Nano SIM card and is not able to be used with the microSIM cards of the iPhone 4S.
The power of the processor and graphics are up to twice as good on the iPhone 5 with the A6 chip. This results in faster game play, improved system performance and a host of other advantages. The iPhone 4S has an A5 chip.
Camera features common to both are a five element lens, tap to focus, face recognition, LED flash, auto-focus, and backside illumination sensor.
The IOS has been updated to IOS 6 which boasts more than 200 changes. One of the biggest is Apple’s navigation system which implements Apple’s own maps. Users will also find enhanced social media implementation, which will no doubt cause social media fans great joy. Also of note is the web browser will allow a full screen view which capitalizes on the iPhones larger screen.
The VGA quality front camera on the iPhone 4S has been upgraded on the iPhone 5 to a 1.2 megapixel resolution and 720p video with a backside illumination sensor.
Other video camera enhancements on the iPhone 5 enable you to take still images while recording, a face detection feature, and better image stabilization.
The iPhone 5 comes with the new EarPods instead of the old Apple Earphones.
There is a new Lightening connector on the iPhone 5 that replaces the old 30-pin dock connector on the iPhone 4S. There is an adapter which will let you connect from the old to the new connector.
The battery life of the iPhone 4S has 6 hours of internet use, 8 hours of 3G talk, 9 hours of Wi-Fi use, and 200 hours of standby time. The iPhone 5 has 8 hours of 3G talk or internet use, 8 hours of LTE internet use, 9 hours of Wi-Fi use, and 225 hours of standby time.
The iPhone 5 sells for a retail price of £529, £599 and £699 in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB.
While hordes of Apple fans will be lining up to get their hands on the upgraded iPhone, many Apple fans were left wanting more. Sure, the additional screen real estate is appreciated, but the iPhone 5 is missing the “wow” factor many fans were expecting.
