Blackberry Storm 9500
The Blackberry 9500 model, also called the storm, is a new entry in the touch screen arena. Ironically it hasn’t actually taken the market by storm, as you would expect from a blackberry. The look and feel of the phone is pretty good, with its unique touchscreen feature hogging the limelight. Unlike other touchscreen phones this is the one which gives you the actual feel clicking by touching, as the screen seems to drop as you press a button.
It has a 3.25 inch (diagonal) screen gives a crisp display, delivering 480 X 360 pixel resolution. The touch-screen feature, though unique, is quite sluggish as compared to others in the category. When it comes to typing it can be a real pain and make you wish for the good old buttons of yesteryear. Though, as they say ‘practice makes perfect ‘, a little bit of playing around with the phone can actually make you pretty comfortable with its interface.
The accelerometer allows you to change it to a widescreen format, with a true, life-like qwerty keyboard along with the feel of actually typing. This though, comes at a price: the screen keeps moving down and you have to wait for it to come back up again. It’s a strict no for impatient people.
It is 3G enabled, comes with GPS, Google maps and blackberry maps. On the software front it comes with facebook, flickr, youtube etc. Here, though, we come across its biggest drawback – No WLAN.
It’s got a cool 3.2 Mega pixel camera support still as well as video mode. The button to be clicked is within the screen and the response time is not exactly top notch. It takes quite some time to actually shoot the pictures. It does not have a ‘front’ camera meaning you cannot video-conference with it either.
It comes along with a 3.5 mm headset jack, meaning we can use headset of our choice. The slot though is on the right edge, instead of top, creating hindrance for use in pocket. It has an inbuilt memory of 1GB and comes with an micro SD card slot. Another unique feature of the phone is the ‘Bedside’ profile, where everything other than the alarm and clock are off, so that no phone or message can disturb you in your sleep!
This phone is certainly RIM’s (Research In Motion) attempt to pull up its selling shares in the market. It’s a kind of take on Apple’s i-Phone. To some extent, it does succeed to give the i-phone a run. Though its look and interface reminds me of an i-Phone I wouldn’t class it along with the phones popularly called i-Clones!
Overall, a very stylish phone, with a friendly interface. Touch screen may take some time to get used to.
