Apple iPhone

The iPhone has been out and about in the mobile market for over a year now, and already it’s had a bit of an upgrade both visually and internally to improve on an already stellar product by adding 3G networking capabilities. The result is the iPhone 3G, the second generation and another achingly cool Apple product that wants to take on all comers, whether its competition from the smartphone or music phone market.

The iPhone is even taking on the current generation of hand held gaming consoles. So have Apple bitten off more than they can chew, or is the iPhone 3G a benchmark mobile phone handset? Let’s look at some of the things that make the iPhone what it is.

Apple iPhone Technical Specifications

The most impressive aspect of the iPhone on first viewing is its exterior design and styling, as well as the large 3.5 inch screen which is entirely touch sensitive.

Apple products are always balancing form and function perfectly, and the iPhone is no exception, with the new 3G version becoming the latest in a long line of Apple branded fashion accessories. That’s not to say that the iPhone is just a trinket, far from it. Its touch screen is arguably the best in the business, with multi-touch capabilities allowing you to depress multiple virtual buttons on the screen at the same time and also enhancing the web browsing experience that we’ll talk about a bit later.

As with all touch screen phones the screen is easily dirtied by constant finger and face contact and can be fragile. Also, because of the touch technology utilised which senses the minute bioelectrical pulses emitted from your fingers the iPhone’s screen will not react to other objects, like your fingertips or a stylus, which may be an issue for some people.

Now that the iPhone comes with 3G connectivity it can connect to and browse the internet nearly three times faster than its older iteration. Also the iPhone now comes with built in GPS and Google maps functionality which is great for finding out where you are, as well as adding extra functionality for app developers.

The iPhone has a 620mhz processor which is underclocked to 412, making it more powerful than a PSP and capable of performing many impressive tasks as a result. It also has a built in accelerometer which is utilised not just for certain menu functions and able to be implemented in games and apps, but is also compatible with Nike+ personal training software, allowing you to use the iPhone as a pedometer whilst you’re out running.

The iPhone is available with either 8GB or 16GB of onboard flash memory for storing all your music, photos, videos, applications and games, and the 3G model also features a 3.5mm headphone jack that is compatible with all standard headphones, unlike the previous model which was limited because the jack connection was recessed.

The battery life of the iPhone 3G has also been improved, with over 300 hours on stand by possible, with 10 hours of talk time, 7 hours of video playback or 24 hours of audio playback available on a single charge. All in all the iPhone has a pretty impressive list of hardware features, and is let down slightly by the underdeveloped photographic capabilities, being burdened by a measly 2 megapixel camera – the Blackberry Storm has 3.2 megapixels – with no video recording ability. However, it is expected that improvements will be made via software updates.

Apple iPhone Software

Apple are known for the simplicity of their interfaces masking the complex and powerful tools that they control, and the iPhone continues this tradition with great aplomb. The iPhone platform and software is all intuitive and the touch screen functionality has been thoughtfully employed across the range of software.

It has great video and music playback and is as capable as the new iPod Touch, which is essentially a cut-down iPhone anyway, so media junkies will be pleased. Browsing the web is intuitive thanks to the Safari browser software, and downloading new music, games and apps is all possible at the touch of a few buttons with iTunes and the Apple app store providing you with diverse new uses for your iPhone.

It is also attempting to get a piece of the business market with support for Microsoft Exchange, which has got Blackberry users interested. To conclude, the iPhone is the market leader in many of the key mobile phone arenas and is the phone that every other manufacturer is constantly aiming to better. At the time of writing the iPhone is still the best all round mobile on the market today.
