Apple’s experience with the current iPhone has taken them a long way down the path when creating the new iPhone 4. However, we are led to believe that the new 4 is not just an upgrade to the current phone, rather its a completely new iPhone .. that just happens to have a similiar looking cousin – so many jokes, too little time.

The first thing you’ll notice when holding the iPhone 4 is that it is slimmer than the current phone. In fact, Apple claim that at just 9.3mm, the iPhone 4 is the world’s thinnest smartphone. Given that they are leading with this on their website, suggests that it may be true – but do we care?

Yes. Why? As we demand more and more functionality from our Smartphones, it would be easy for manufacturers to lose track of the practical elements too. Its still a phone. Phones need holding and size and weight are still vital elements in the day to day use.

Not only is practical use important, design is essential too. Apple’s success in recent years is the direct reflection of some superb products with beautiful designs. Think about it, there aren’t many ugly Apple products are there?

The iPhone 4 is no exception either. The primary design differences to the current iPhone are that the design is square and the technology is house between two glossy panels of aluminosilicate glass. Alum-what – apparently, it’s the same type of glass used in the windshields of helicopters and high-speed trains. So what? How dare you, how very dare you. Its to stop it getting damaged when you drop it in the pub et al. The iPhone 4 is chemically strengthened to be 20 times stiffer and 30 times harder than plastic, the glass is ultradurable and more scratch resistant than ever. It’s also recyclable for those eco warriors amongst you.

iPhone 4 LCD

The iPhone 4 has a 960 x 640 backlit LCD display and boasts a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch. Before you gloss over that bit, just take a minute to think about it. Its 960 x 640, how does that compare to your laptop, or even your desktop. If you are like me and have the latest screens etc then its not as good, but the most common screen resolution for desktops at the moment is 1024 x 768, which makes the iPhone 4 quite remarkable for a phone. In fact, from what we can tell, the iPhone 4 has the highest-resolution screen on any phone, ever.

So how did Apple achieve this? The Apple engineers developed pixels so small, just 78 micrometers in diameter, that we mere humans can’t distinguish individual pixels. Bottom line is that text is remarkably sharp and graphics incredibly vivid. IPS technology also provides excellent color and contrast from almost any viewing angle.

iPhone 4 A4 Chip

Apple engineers designed the A4 chip to be a remarkably powerful yet remarkably power-efficient mobile processor, which is important in preserving battery life. With it, the iPhone 4 can easily perform all the complex stuff we now demand from an iPhone such as doing loads of stuff at the same time, multitasking, editing videos, and placing FaceTime calls. The current iPhone doesn’t have the best reputation for battery life so it will be interesting to see how this new 4 model copes.

Apple have built-in three-axis gyroscope to the iPhone4. When paired with the accelerometer, it makes the iPhone 4 capable of advanced motion sensing such as user generated acceleration, full 3D attitude, and rotation rate. Translation: More motion gestures and greater precision for an even better gaming experience.

iPhone 4 Camera

The iPhone 4 camera shoots 5-megapixel photos and stunning HD video, which is a move forward from the current iPhone camera. Before you say, its only got a 5MP camera, do you really need anything more. Even a one megapixel lens will produce stunning photos of A3 paper size, are you producing images bigger than that?

With its advanced backside illumination sensor, it captures beautiful images even in low-light settings, such as pubs and clubs. The built-in LED flash does double duty. When you’re taking pictures, it works as a flash. When you’re shooting video it can stay on to light up the scene. And on the front of iPhone 4, the built-in camera is perfect for making FaceTime calls and shooting self-portraits.

While most phones have only one microphone, iPhone 4 has two. The main mic, located on the bottom next to the dock connector, is for phone calls, voice commands, and memos. The second mic, built into the top near the headphone jack, is for FaceTime calls and for making your phone calls better. It works with the main mic to suppress unwanted and distracting background sounds, such as music and loud conversations. This dual-mic noise suppression helps make every conversation a quiet one.

With its large Multi-Touch display and innovative software, iPhone lets you control everything using just your fingers. How does it work? A panel laminated on the glass senses your touch using electrical fields. It can register multiple touches at once to support advanced gestures such as pinch to zoom, two-finger tap, and more. The panel then transmits the information to the Retina display below it.
