External Hard Drives

An External Hard Drive is the same type of hard drive that you find on the inside your computer, except that it is on the outside or external to the main housing. These hard drives are used to store files in the same way as your main computer hard drive. They are mainly used as a back-up drive to safeguard important files like documents and spreadsheets, or more personal, and perhaps more precious files like photos and your music collection. External hard drives come in two main sizes, 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch. The smaller hard drives are the same as you would find in a laptop computer, and the larger drives are those hard drives found in desktop computers. The difference is in the interface that connects the external hard drive to your computer. Normally, external hard drives connect to the computer via a USB or Firewire cable, newer computers do this automatically and assign the external hard drive with a drive letter.
